Which points are to be considered during the construction of the Bird’s Nest in the Garden?
First of all, make sure that the nests you place in the garden are both durable in material and fixed in placement. Because there will be cats around waiting to attack the nest of birds. Keep in mind that cats, the enemies of birds and nests, can easily reach the nests of 3-4 meters high. But no cat can damage the durable material and destroy the fixed bird’s nest. This rule applies to all nests.
Second of all, what you need to pay attention to is deciding what kind of birds you want to attract into the garden. Because the entrance holes of the houses need to be adjusted according to the targeted bird breed. For example, if you intend to attract songbirds such as sparrows, goldfinch, nightingale, the hole diameter of the nest should be 5-5.5 cm. As the nest will be in a covered form, first learn about the birds nesting indoors. Sparrows, tits and starlings are the most important birds nesting in such bird houses. Sometimes even swallows can visit your birdhouse. There are so many birds that need a large enough, reliable and robust bird’s nest! They don’t say no to protection from the storm, the cold, the rain and the sun and to raise their offspring, in short, to a tiny shelter in your garden.
Building Bird nests in the garden from decorative pumpkin
You can create amazing bird nests from ornamental gourd or what we call pumpkin. The only thing to be aware of when making a bird’s nest is to open the hole where the birds enter, not from the top or the full belly, but from the bottom. Because it is inevitable that rain water can enter from the hole opened from the top while birds can easily enter. Rain water enters a bird’s nest, which inevitably causes decay in this confined space over time. Thoroughly carve the inside of the pumpkin, open the entrance in the right place in a sufficient size, paint the outer surface to the desired color and then varnish. There is a healthy bird’s nest.
Building a wooden birdhouse
If you say “I would love to be able to do bird nest in the garden or I would like to do it myself from wood, the materials you need: 2.5 cm thick plywood, hand saw, carpenter protractor, tape measure, pencil, drill, hammer, 7.5 cm wooden dowel bars, wood glue (optional) and paint in any color you like.
Measuring and cutting plywood
For the bottom or foundation of the birdhouse, cut a square piece of plywood with 5.5 cm edges.
Then cut 3 rectangular pieces measuring 15 × 25 cm to form the side and back surfaces of the bird’s nest.
The roof or the top part of the bird’s nest must be larger than the lower part.
Cut another square piece of plywood measuring 20 × 20 cm. Measure the upper part of two 15 × 25 cm rectangular pieces to form an angle of 45 degrees for this purpose.
These parts that you create will incline to the top so that rainwater can easily drain down the roof. For this reason, you should cut the angled bottom in order for it to be 5 cm smaller than the top.
Cut another 15 × 20 cm rectangular piece of plywood to form the front of the bird’s nest. Then, drill a large hole in the front part of the bird’s nest with a drill to form the inlet.
Drill a smaller hole with the drill about 10 cm below the hole you drilled in the front of the bird’s nest. Insert the wooden dowel rod through the small hole you have previously created and make sure it is intact for the birds to stand on. If the dowel rod is loose, you can use some wood glue for the edges of the hole.
MOUNTING THE PARTS
Thereafter, it only remains to assemble the parts. Carefully nail the 15 × 25 cm piece to the bottom of the bird’s nest first. Then nail the side parts that you cut at an angle to the back and bottom of the bird’s nest. Nail the front with both sides. Pin the roof to the top inclined part of the bird’s nest. Make sure that the roof is inclined downwards to prevent water from entering the hole.
Finally, drill a small hole in the rear with a drill to hang your bird’s nest on a wire or nail. Now you can color and paint your own bird house as you like.
Building a birdhouse made of thick cardboard for the garden
Using handcrafts only, you can cut a thick cardboard as shown below, paint it in any color and place it in your garden. If the milk box is too small for the bird’s nest, you can increase the dimensions in the drawing proportionally to obtain the bird’s nest of your choice. You don’t need to put sawdust or tiny brushwood in the bird nests. Birds will be able to meet these needs themselves and will bring in the most suitable materials for their needs. Since it is very difficult for birds to find feed, especially in winter, it is best to leave stale bread or bird feed near the nest.
